Cataract Treatment From Our Austin Eye Doctorcataract treatment with austin optmetrist

June is Cataract Awareness Month, making now a great time to schedule your annual eye exam with our Austin eye doctor, if you haven't done so already. Having regular eye exams and screenings is a great way to stay on top of your health and make sure you aren't showing any signs of ocular conditions, such as cataracts, that can affect your vision.

Causes and Risk Factors for Cataracts

Specifically, cataracts occur when opaque or cloudy spots develop on the lens of the eye. These cataracts develop slowly—usually over a period of several years—before any symptoms become obvious. There are many potential risk factors that can put a person at a greater risk of developing cataracts. For example, people age 60 and older are already at an increased risk, as are those who have a family history of the condition.

The main symptom of cataracts is a cloudy or blurry spot in your vision that doesn't go away over time and can gradually worsen. Many patients describe having cataracts as trying to see out of a cloudy or frosty window.

Treatment and Management Options

The good news is that there are treatment and management options for cataracts, and we provide them right here in our office. We'll begin by determining the severity of your cataracts; in some cases, they may still be small enough that no further treatment is required. In these cases, we'll keep an eye on them and possibly use medication to keep them from spreading.

In some cases, a surgical procedure may be recommended to remove the cloudy lens of the eye and replace it with an artificial one. This is an outpatient procedure that is relatively quick and will take care of cataracts of any size.
