When you have trouble with your vision, you may need to wear eyeglasses or get eye surgery. But what if you could avoid both and still benefit from vision correction? Here at Westlake Hills Vision Center, we offer orthokeratology to help you with vision issues. Learn more about how ortho-K was first established and what this treatment provides for vision improvement.
Ortho-K or orthokeratology is known as overnight vision correction. This treatment involves gas permeable contacts that reshape your cornea while you sleep. It is useful for correcting refractive eye errors, such as astigmatism, blurry vision, or nearsightedness. When you use ortho-k therapy you can see without the use of daily contact lenses or eyeglasses for vision correction. However, you need to use ortho-k lenses each night to maintain the vision correction benefit.
Orthokeratology was first discovered in the 1940s with contributions from numerous eye doctors. It originally involved wearing contact lenses to correct myopia aka nearsightedness. By the 1960s George Jessen designed Ortho-K contacts using acrylic glass, and it was called Orthofocus. The first contacts to feature a reverse zone lens design were created in the 1980s by Drs. Nick Stolen and Richard Wlodyga. Yet it wasn’t until 2002 that the FDA approved overnight wear contact lenses for orthokeratology. This is what we now refer to as Ortho-K lenses.
Individuals who are suffering from vision correction issues related to corneal dysfunction can benefit from ortho-K in Austin. It is also ideal for individuals who do not or cannot wear eyeglasses or contact lenses during the day for vision correction. This includes young children who struggle with vision correction devices, as well as adults who have jobs or extracurricular activities including swimming that make wearing contacts or glasses difficult.
