The harsh sunlight that we experience here in Austin, Texas is harmful to the skin, which is why folks make sure to put on sunscreen and wear a hat to avoid damage that could result in sunburn or skin cancer whenever going out and about. Your eyes also need protection from the sun, and your Texas eye doctor wants to remind you of the importance of wearing properly fitted sunglasses whenever you are outdoors during the day.
Sunglasses are protective eyewear you should always wear during the day to protect your eyes from glare as well as harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation emanating from the sun. Sunglasses are available to protect your eyes from light coming in from the sides and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to complement any look. This protective eyewear keeps glare from reflecting off of glass and metal surfaces that would otherwise keep you from seeing clearly. You can wear ordinary, non-prescription sunglasses, and prescription sunglasses.
If you don’t wear sunglasses on a regular basis, you put your vision at risk. UV rays are part of the invisible section of the light spectrum and are categorized as UVA, UVB and UVC rays. Our planet’s atmosphere prevents UVC rays from hitting our eyes. However, UVA and UVB rays penetrate this layer and can damage your eyes without proper protection.
You need to select sunglasses that are labeled by the manufacturer as blocking at minimum 99% of UVA and UVB rays. For anti-glare protection too, you should get sunglasses that are rated at blocking at least 75% to 90% of visible light rays.
At Westlake Hills Vision, we are experts in helping patients pick out the perfect sunglasses to complement their face and overall look. With so many options to choose from, we are happy to steer you towards your preferred brand, color, and shape of sunglasses frames. If you use prescription glasses, we can provide prescription sunglasses too. Or, if you use contact lenses, you can continue to wear them with non-prescription sunglasses, whichever you prefer.
Polarized sunglasses are ideal when you need to filter out excessive glare from sunlight bouncing off of horizontal surfaces. Our staff routinely recommends polarized lenses for active people looking to protect their eyes when driving or jogging or when engaging in pastimes such as golfing or skiing.
Protecting your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun will be much more pleasant when you select eyewear that matches your sense of style. We stand behind our sunglasses and to that end, we are proud to offer a 2-year warranty on all the eyewear that we sell.
