The most obvious symptom is dry eyes, other symptoms which may need to be treated include:

  • Aching sensations

Most often Dry Eye Syndrome occurs when there is a problem with the fatty oils, water or mucus components of tears. Dry Eye Syndrome can happen to anyone at any age but there are certain factors, which can increase your risk of getting the condition including:

  • Aging
  • Air conditioning/fans
  • Allergies
  • Contact lens solution
  • Dehydration
  • Digital screens
  • Dry/hot/windy environments
  • Female hormones/menopause/pregnancy
  • Frequent airplane flying
  • Increased tear evaporation
  • Keeping in contacts too long
  • Low tear production
  • Medical conditions including: autoimmune disease (like arthritis), diabetes, lupus, rosacea, scleroderma, Sjogren’s syndrome, thyroid disorders
  • Medication side effects
  • Post laser eye surgery
  • Smartphone overuse
  • Smoking
  • Tear gland damage
  • Vitamin A/omega-3 fatty acid deficiency
  • Other causes


Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome can vary significantly from person to person and may even be symptoms of other eye problems.
