Orthokeratology, it’s not just for kids.  Although you will most commonly here about ortho K being used with kids for myopia management ( it slows the progression of near-sightedness in kids).  We can also fit adults as well.

What is orthokeratology? It’s a therapy that reshapes the front surface of the eye, the cornea, to give you no prescription during the day.  You sleep with the lens at night.  We can fit a wide array of prescriptions using our WAVE software that lets us do CUSTOM contacts specifically designed to match the front of your eye.

We also use a state of the art topographer, the Oculus 5M Keratograph, that let’s us see if you are a good candidate for the treatment.  If you are post-LASIK, RK, or keratoconic we would not recommend this treatment.

Why do ortho K?  It will give you visual freedom during the day.

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

What is Ortho K?  It’s a lens that reshapes the front of the eye while you sleep and you do not wear glasses or contacts during the day.

How long do I wear it before I can stop wearing and my eye will stay that shape?

Once you stop wearing the lenses even for a night, your eye will start to revert back to it’s natural prescription.  Even if you were the lenses for years this will be the case. If you stop wearing the lenses it can take 4-6 weeks depending on your prescription to go back to it’s natural shape.

Can I do this if I’ve had LASIK?

Technically yes, but it is very difficult to get a good outcome. We do not fit post LASIK, RK, or kertaconic patients in our office and I don’t know of an office that does.  Your better option would be one of our custom GP lenses.

Can I use insurance?

We do not accept insurance for this treatment.  We charge a global fee that includes the exam, refraction, optomap, contact lens fit and a year supply of lens which is equal to 2 lenses for each eye.

How long does each lens last?

The recommended replacement for each lens is 1 year.  Even with the best handling and care the lenses will warp between 12 to 18 months.

Will Ortho K slow my near-sightedness?

For kids ortho K can slow the progression of near-sightedness by about 50%.

If I’m Ortho K to slow near-sightedness up to what age do I need to wear them?

Most drastic changes will stop by the age of 16, in patients that are high risk for progression i.e have siblings and parents that are near-sighted or at least one parent that is VERY near-sighted, wearing the lenses till the age of 21 will ensure the least amount of progression.

How much does it cost?

This will depend on your prescription and if you have reached the point in life where you are near-sighted or not.  Our fees start at $2100.  We won’t know what you will need until we at least do a consultation. Call/text us at 512-651-5186 or email appointment@westlakehillsvision.com
