We are excited to start shooting our Scleral Lens series. This series will walk a patient through what to expect when doing a scleral fit at our office Westlake HillsVision Center. Dr. Susan Elizondo is our fitter.
Who can wear a scleral lens? Anyone! Scleral Lenses are hard lenses that sit on the white part of the eye, the sclera. This makes them incredibly comfortable. More comfortable than soft lenses or rigid gas permeable lenses that sit on the cornea. These lenses can often be life changing for patients that are post corneal surgery such as RK, LASIK, or corneal transplant to name a few. They are also ideal for keratoconic patients. Often for these patients glasses do not provide adequate vision.
They are ideal for a patient with dry eyes or that has failed in soft contact lenses. In our office we use the Insight Scleral lens by MetroOptics. This lens has a reading portion so patients often get amazing up and distance vision. The more irregular the cornea, the less we promise for up close vision. This doesn’t mean you can throw out your glasses though.
Scleral lenses should only be worn for 8-10 hours at a time for ideal eye health and never be slept it.
